You KNOW the child is smart

So why do they seem so stuck?

Losing the place on the page

Forgetting instructions

Rushing through the work

Giving up when it gets tough

THE REAL REASON WHY CAPABLE KIDS STRUGGLE:

Cognitive skills matter more
than intelligence

To succeed at learning, children need to:

  • Talk themselves through a challenge (instead of shutting down)
  • Hold onto instructions long enough to finish them (instead of forgetting halfway through)
  • Notice their own mistakes (instead of rushing past them)
  • Make a plan before diving in (instead of becoming overwhelmed)
  • Keep track of where they are in a task (instead of losing their place)
  • Shift tactics if something’s not working (instead of repeating what’s already failed)

Each of these things is a SKILL.
And just because a child is smart, it doesn't mean they can manage their own thinking.

PRESENTER

Angela Te Roller, MA

Research Psychologist

Angela holds a Master's degree in Research Psychology, with professional experience spanning higher education, learner support, counseling, and holistic wellbeing. She is a member of the multidisciplinary team behind CogniEnhance, a research-based program for improving cognitive function with emerging evidence and hundreds of trained practitioners. She's also the Head of Academic Quality Assurance at Boston City Campus University in South Africa.

Ang is a former high-school guidance counselor and experienced higher-education professional, who brings together psychological research, educational experience, and practical wellbeing approaches to her work. Ang completed her Master’s degree in Research Psychology, with her research focusing on male suicidal behaviour, giving her a strong foundation in understanding human behaviour, psychological processes and the complex factors that influence how people think, respond and function.

Her research experience also extends into large-scale community-based health research. She worked on a PEPFAR-funded TB and HIV prevention research program across seven townships in the Western Cape of South Africa, where the research contributed to improved medication uptake and adherence and to efforts that helped reduce the spread of drug-resistant TB, as well as contributing to a significant reduction in mother-to-child transmission.

Alongside her academic and research background, Ang is a registered Specialist Wellness Counsellor and incorporates mindfulness-based techniques and mind-body practices into her work, bringing a holistic perspective to wellbeing, learning and human development.

Having worked across psychology, research, schools, higher education and wellness, Ang brings a particular passion for connecting what we know about the mind and brain with what happens in real-world learning environments.

Dr. Nolan Damon, Ph.D

Cognitive Development Specialist

Dr. Damon is a cognitive development specialist, mathematics educator, and blended-learning designer and trainer. He holds a Ph.D. in Mathematics and has worked across education, instructional design, online learning, web development, and digital training. Through CogniEnhance, Dr. Damon helps translate research from cognitive psychology, neuroscience, and educational theory into practical frameworks for attention, memory, executive functioning, reasoning, and decision-making.

Dr. Damon’s work combines cognitive games, gamification, metacognition, and learning analytics. Building on his research with deaf and hearing-impaired students, he develops interactive mathematics environments and cognitive games designed to exercise attention, memory, reasoning, planning, and flexible thinking. His accessibility-focused approach recognises different learning styles, preferences, and support needs through varied modalities—including visual representations, sign language, video, written explanations and interactive exploration—alongside individual, collaborative and reflective learning.

Drawing on neuroplasticity and mediated learning, his work emphasises purposeful practice, feedback and reflection, with a broader commitment to students with learning disabilities. His focus is on helping learners access challenging ideas while developing greater awareness of how they approach, monitor and improve their own learning.

PRESENTER

Gabriel Ramaoka

Head of Business Development

WHY IS THIS WEBINAR SO IMPORTANT, RIGHT NOW?

As information becomes more available, the ability to think, process, and retain becomes more critical

Today, children are navigating unprecedented levels of information, distraction, digital stimulation, and demand. Knowing what to teach is no longer enough. We also need to understand how children process information, manage attention, hold information in working memory, reason, regulate their thinking, and adapt when cognitive demand increases. This webinar will give you a glimpse into how you can develop these skills in children.
